What if we’re living through the greatest failure of imagination in human history?

An essay on the critical infrastructure we need to thrive in the next frontier.

It sounds like a strange claim to make at a moment when human ingenuity seems almost embarrassingly abundant. We are building machines that can reason across complex problems, engineering biology, developing new forms of energy, creating increasingly capable robots, returning to the Moon, and constructing scientific instruments that can observe worlds around other stars. The 2026 Stanford AI Index reports that artificial intelligence capabilities continue to advance rapidly even as our methods for evaluating and governing them struggle to keep pace. (Stanford HAI) The International Energy Agency expects another 4,600 gigawatts of renewable generating capacity to be added worldwide between 2025 and 2030, roughly twice the deployment of the previous five years. (IEA) Clearly, we are not suffering from a shortage of invention.

I believe we are suffering from a shortage of imagination. If so, how would we know?

Invention gives us things that did not exist before. Imagination allows us to perceive what becomes possible because they exist. We are very good at delivering on that first part and exceedingly tragic at the second. When something genuinely new appears, our instinct is to fit it into the world we already understand. We ask which jobs artificial intelligence will replace, whether robots will replace workers, whether autonomous vehicles will replace drivers, or whether humans will someday live on Mars. These are sensible questions, but what they all have in common is a future that substitutes one thing for another while leaving the surrounding world largely intact.

History suggests that transformative technologies rarely arrive quietly and politely. The automobile did more than replace the horse. It reorganized cities, commerce, manufacturing, travel, courtship, policing, leisure, housing and our relationship with distance. It helped create suburbs, highways, motels, shopping centers, drive-through restaurants, traffic jams and oil geopolitics. The smartphone did more than give us a better telephone. It reinvented photography, navigation, journalism, banking, dating, entertainment, retail, politics, friendship and attention. In both cases, the technology itself was only the beginning of the story. The consequential change was the world that reorganized around it.

That is where I think our approach to imagination repeatedly fails us. We concentrate on the invention when we should be spending as much focus and attention on the reality updating because of it.

Part of the problem is simply attention. The present is extraordinarily good at making itself important. Elections, wars, markets, scandals, quarterly earnings, product launches and whatever happened this morning arrive with urgency. Possibility rarely behaves that way. It tends to appear as something small and disconnected: an unusual result in a laboratory, a new material, a regulatory change, a scientific instrument becoming dramatically more sensitive, a capability that once required a national laboratory becoming available to any startup. Individually, these are developments. Connect enough of them and they may describe the beginning of a wholly new and different world.

Futurists sometimes describe this problem as the “tyranny of the present”: immediate demands consume our capacity to think beyond them. UNESCO’s work on futures literacy makes a related argument, that our assumptions about the future influence what we are capable of perceiving and doing in the present, often without our realizing it. In other words, thinking about the future is not primarily an exercise in prediction. It is a way of revealing the assumptions constraining what we can see now. (UNESCO)

That may be the deeper failure of imagination. We do not experience reality directly; we experience it through models of how we believe reality works. Our professions give us models. Our politics give us models. Markets, institutions, education and experience give us models. So do our fears, ambitions and incentives. We need these models because the world would otherwise be incomprehensibly complex. The problem comes when the world changes but the model does not. Something genuinely new appears and we try to make it legible using categories inherited from the old world.

Is artificial intelligence a tool or a worker? Is space exploration or industry? Is biology science or engineering? Is media information or entertainment? Is the next computer something we carry, something we wear, something embedded in our environment, or something we no longer recognize as a computer at all? These questions become difficult because the categories themselves may be expiring. The future does not have any obligation to organize itself according to the distinctions we find useful today.

This becomes much more consequential when multiple transformations happen simultaneously. Artificial intelligence will not develop in isolation from robotics. Robotics will not develop in isolation from materials science, manufacturing or energy. Energy will influence the economics of computation. Computation will increasingly influence biology and scientific discovery. Advances in launch, autonomous systems and manufacturing will change what is economically possible in space. Each domain affects the opportunity space of the others. The future is not a collection of parallel trend lines. It is an interaction.

And interactions are much harder to imagine than inventions.

Consider what happens when capable AI is combined with inexpensive robotics, abundant renewable electricity and increasingly autonomous manufacturing. Asking how many factory workers a robot might replace captures only one narrow dimension of the change. A more interesting question is what kinds of products, companies, supply chains and places become possible when the marginal cost of producing certain physical things falls dramatically. What happens to geography if a small company can manufacture locally what once required an enormous global supply chain? What happens to entrepreneurship when sophisticated engineering capabilities become available to people who could never previously afford them? What happens to waste when products can be disassembled as intelligently as they were assembled? What becomes valuable? What becomes obsolete? What entirely new problems appear?

I don’t know the answers. That is the point.

The purpose of imagination is not to be right about the future. It is to increase the number of futures we are capable of considering.

This is where imagination becomes more rigorous than creativity. Strategic foresight, scenario planning, speculative design, simulation, games and worldbuilding are different methods for doing essentially the same important thing: escaping the gravitational pull of the present long enough to examine another possible world. At their best, they allow us to ask not “What will happen?” but “What could happen, what would have to be true for that world to exist, and what would we do differently today if it did?”

Worldbuilding is especially interesting to me because it forces us to imagine systems rather than just artifacts. Science fiction writers understand this intuitively. Inventing a teleportation device is easy. Building a convincing world in which teleportation exists is difficult. What happens to airports? Borders? Hotels? Immigration? Real estate? Warfare? Disease transmission? Long-distance relationships? Cities? Crime? If transportation becomes nearly instantaneous, location itself changes meaning. The interesting design problem was never the teleportation machine.

We can apply the same discipline to technologies that actually exist. Instead of asking what artificial intelligence can do, we can construct worlds in which increasingly capable artificial intelligence is ordinary and ask what changes around it. Instead of asking when fusion will become commercially viable, we can explore what becomes possible if energy becomes dramatically cheaper and more abundant. Instead of asking whether humans will establish permanent settlements beyond Earth, we can investigate the economics, institutions, cultures, professions and everyday objects that would have to exist if they did. These are not predictions. They are prototypes of possibility.

This is why I believe imagination should be treated as infrastructure. Applied and strategic. We invest enormous resources in producing knowledge, technology and innovation, but comparatively little in developing our collective capacity to understand what those innovations could make possible. We build increasingly powerful instruments for changing reality without necessarily improving our ability to imagine the realities they might create.

There is danger in that failure, because unintended consequences live in the territory we failed to imagine. But I am increasingly interested in the other side of the equation. Unintended opportunities live there too. Entire industries, scientific breakthroughs, new institutions, better ways of living and solutions to problems we have accepted as permanent may already be latent in technologies and discoveries that exist today. We may simply lack the perspective necessary to recognize them.

That is what makes this moment so unusual. The remarkable thing is far beyond the horizon of artificial intelligence, robotics, biology, energy, materials science, computation and space technologies. It is that they are advancing together. Their combinations create a possibility space far larger than any one field can see from inside itself. The expertise that makes us exceptionally good at understanding one part of that transformation can simultaneously make it harder to see the whole.

Perhaps that is the greatest failure of imagination in human history. Not that we have stopped dreaming, or that we have run out of ideas, or even that we are failing to predict the future. It is that our ability to create new possibilities may be advancing faster than our ability to perceive what those possibilities mean. If so, the challenge ahead is not simply to invent more. It is to learn how to see further.
